Origins and Backstory: Two legends collide here, the “PK” or Pure Kush clone (likely TCPK or related to it) and Meangene’s famous Limepop male—two of Meangene’s favorite and most-used plants in his breeding. Both are known mostly for their intensely limey aromas/flavors, sticky resin, and potent effects. I really didn’t know much about the cross and hadn’t heard anything about it prior to germinating this singular female, but the lineage was enough to get me excited, as I have had exceptional results with other Limepop crosses from Meangene. I received these mixed in with many others from Meangene many years ago, and have tried popping a couple here and there over the years. Finally, I pulled a female to grow and review, but please keep in mind I only grew a single female plant—there is much more data to be gathered on this cross!
Morphology: While I only grew a single female and she was entirely green, I am told that these plants can, and often do, end up completely purple. That’s intriguing on its own, as purple OG type plants are quite rare in my experience. The plant I grew was very small and so unfortunately I cannot speak much to the structure, but the bud structure does appear to be similar to both that of PK and Limepop, which are both nicely developing plants with middle-of-the-road structure. They are not incredibly dense or loose flowers, but are solid and highly resinous, with almost sharp, piercing calyxes. The weed itself is a very bright green with very high resin content.
Aroma: The aroma is intriguing, a bit surprising, very nuanced with some loud features and some more subtle. Dominated by a velvet-lime quality, there are tones not far off from Lucky Charms cereal marshmallows. The aroma is also exceedingly sharp and astringent, with pronounced notes of acetone, nail polish remover, and paint stripping chemicals. There is some fuel, but the chemicals that smell like they’ll make your nose bleed are much more intense. Intriguingly and surprisingly, there are soft and subtle notes that are floral and herbaceous in nature, hitting on geraniums. I can also detect urinal cakes (which so often and pleasantly accompanies Meangene’s lime varieties), methane/propane, asphalt and tarmac, deet bugspray, and even the occasional exotic fruit. There is a lot of overlap with TCPK, but it is also markedly different. After an extended cure in a jar, the smell is far less sharp and astringent, with much more emphasis on perfumey OG tones, citronella, lemon, and lime, as well as pronounced ginger/ginger ale, and floral geranium notes. The ginger is a great surprise after a cure, reminiscent of Limepop Kush, the only other plant I’ve grown that smelled profoundly of ginger.
Flavor: After a cure, the flavor is pretty true to the aroma, and really is a unique plant. There are pronounced notes of ginger, ginger ale, lime, marshmallow (specifically like those in cereal boxes moreso than packaged on their own), urinal cakes, and perfumey OG. There are some floral tones, and even some exotic fruits manifest, just like those in TCPK, ranging from melon to peach to more tropical fruits that are unknown to me. It’s velvety smooth, and completely palate-coating, making the experience last long after one is done consuming. There are still some sharp chemical notes after a cure, but those terpenes are exceptionally volatile, and are certainly more noticeable in the flavor when the harvest is immediately fresh. It’s in the ballpark of an OG, and also offers a lot of depth that is completely outside of OG varietals.
Effects: As long as we’re comparing this plant to other OGs….it’s pretty similar in terms of potency and head change, but I find this plant to be more indica-dominated in its effects than a typical OG. I am always put back and down by this one, as if it forces me to step away from my place as “doing” in life for a moment to just reflect and be. It is a slow come-up, and lacks the euphoric rush offered by many other OGs. It is more of a downer feeling than an upper, and has its place in evenings for me. If I need something strong at the end of the day to sleep, or I’ve been stressed and really need help winding down, or have consumed other strong smoke earlier in the day, this is a great choice to carry a strong enough effect and encourage sleep. The effect is long-lasting, a deeply stony plant that is wonderful for evenings or snowy days spent inside. It is strong enough that it can inspire some paranoia as well, so take it lightly….this is intense weed!
Overall: There is a lot to love about this cross, and certainly I’d like to see more of these plants after growing this single female. Highlights for me personally would be the intensely-resinous flowers, the aroma that shifts from madly volatile/astringent/chemical based when fresh to more gingery-lime-OG when cured, the flavor that fully follows the aroma, and the potency of effect. I really love the flavor on this one, it is so smooth and complex and nuanced, and I’m never quite sure how to categorize it. I would love to find all of these traits in a purple-flowered plant as well, as the breeder suggests is more than possible. This is definitely medical-caliber weed with a lot of potential for dealing with pain or insomnia, and I personally find it useful to keep multiple jars of very high potency weed on the shelf. When you need it, and build a tolerance to 1 or 3 of them, it’s great to have one more on your shelf…
That said, the down-and-out effect of this weed is often too much for me on most occasions, and I tend to reach for more euphoric and uppity plants when I have the option. Even if I am looking for something “chill,” I tend to reach for a broadleaf Kush more often than I reach for this weed. For me personally, this is an ultra-potent smoke ideally used for medical applications—pain, sleep, or if you’re sick and laying low anyway, and just want to feel better.
