Origins and Backstory: This is one of the most famous OG clones of all time. The same friend who gifted me the Grandnesia Haze plant (link) gifted me this plant. It was also grown full season, outside on my partially shaded deck in organic soil. Even though the light conditions were not ideal (about 5 hours of direct light everyday), the quality of this flower was spectacular and was actually the favorite of the season for many of my friends.
Appearance: Due to the partial shade, the buds are very leafy. Temperatures reached freezing and possibly below, but the flowers and entirety of the plant remained green and did not exhibit any kind of coloring. These flowers are fluffier than normal, again due to the light conditions. However, calyxes are still covered with resin, and the buds are extraordinarily sticky. From afar, this looks like mediocre weed. Even up close, it looks just above-average greenbud that really isn’t remarkable, just impressively-frosty. But even then, many other designer strains these days are equally so.
Aroma: This weed stinks in classic SFV OG Kush fashion. It is fuely, funky, skunky, dank, and loud. Everyone comments on how loud this weed is, and I think it may in part be due to being somewhat shade-grown. People love the smell of this weed, as it encompasses everything great about weed. When I hear the word “dank,” this profile comes to mind. It is the classically sweet-skunky smell from afar, with nuance of fuel and funk when one gets up close. Similar to other OGs and Sour Diesel cuts, this plant smells like lemon cleaner, sour diesel fuel, some sugar cookie, and a delightful perfume that accompanies my favorite OG plants. There is a vague and generic botanical note in the background, one that reminds me of tomato plant stems.
Flavor: In the same vein as the aroma, this plant is OG all the way. I get an immediate flavor of lemons and intense lysol/cleaner aroma, along with signature sour OG funk and perfume. There is a sour note almost like rye bread (or even moldy rye bread) reminiscent of Headband. It is pronounced, complex, and intense, yielding a lovely sensation on the exhale. Sometimes I forget how great OG is until I smoke it again, and this lip-smacking-pucker-up bud begs to be smoked regardless how high you are. When someone describes weed as “dank,” this is generally the flavor I think of. Overall, it is like a lemon-cleaner-sour-perfume.
Effects: This weed is strong and immediate, hailing from its OG lineage. I can feel this one behind the eyes and along my forehead as I exhale smoke—the potency is no secret, SFV hits immediately in my head, and gives me the classic happy-go-lucky attitude cannabis is known for, and that we all love. I really do think SFV OG is one of the most giggly/smiley, happy, and creative OG cuts out there (as opposed to being purely potent or devastatingly-strong). It’s like a warm hug or a warm blanket of well-being that just makes me feel great. For whatever reason, SFV OG has always meshed near-perfectly with my personal cannabinoid receptors, and just really hits home properly—I’ve always enjoyed smoking this weed! While felt obviously and immediately, the totality of the effects probably peak around 30 minutes in. This is when I really feel warm, mellow, relaxed, fairly lazy, with the overall sense that everything is going to be cool. The stone lasts a while, and will encourage a nap later if it’s smoked early on.
Overall: One of the best smokes of my 2019 outdoor season (over a dozen strains), it really is a toss-up between SFV and Triangle for me. Triangle tends to be more potent and inward in my experience, while SFV OG Kush makes me a giggly like a little boy (and is certainly not lacking in potency!). The lemon-cleaner and mildly sour flavor of the SFV is something I will go back to again and again over my lifetime (or even in the hour). When I have jars of this stuff, I smoke them quickly. And if I have company, they ask to take the SFV home if they see it’s out. Even though this is an S1, this is a close representation of the real deal, which is one of my all-time favorite smokes. SFV OG Kush is one of the best offerings of the American west coast cannabis scene—a true complete package of flavor, aroma, and effect of legendary standing. SFV, Triangle, and Ghost are the holy trinity of OG cuts as far as I am concerned (assuming we can call Underdawg/Loompa’s a Headband cut, not an OG!), with each one offering something a little different. Personally, I think the effects of the SFV are the “best”, while Triangle and Ghost tend more toward pure potency—but we are really splitting hairs at this point, and it’s tough to wrong among company like this.
